A New Rhythm Game Approaches
My name is Karl. I’m the lead (and only) developer for a new game I’m making called Drummi.
As a gamer and musician, I always get excited about new rhythm games coming out. So why not try and make one?
One of my favorite games of all time (and I highly recommend it) is called Rhythm Heaven for the Nintendo DS. I think this is truly one of the best music games of all time (next to Guitar Hero 3, of course). Rhythm Heaven is a game that teaches, and tests your rhythm, and is accompanied by clean and cute characters & animation, paired with a ripper, memorable soundtrack. I doubt my rhythmic ability would be anywhere close to where it is now was it not for this video game.
Anyway, Drummi is the first game I ever tried to make when I was learning game development. Foolishly, I tried to implement rhythmic timing using array indexes with paired timestamps. But it somehow (kinda) worked and kept motivation and momentum high. I did however abandon the project for an online course in Unity 3D. But now that I am (slightly) smarter and more able, I am now re-building the game from the ground up, using proper systems to track rhythmic timing and better standards for coding and organizing.
Drummi is designed to be a small collection of games and ways to interact with rhythm and music. It will feature strictly original music written by yours truly (me) with 3 planned gamemodes:
>Bongo Mode - The most prominent game mode where the user must match randomly generated beats (based on difficulty) using their 2-input-bongo on the bottom of the screen.
>Rhythm Tower Defense - It’s all in the name. You’ll probably find some updates in later blogs.
>Dungeon Mode - Similar to Bongo Mode but with a whole dungeon to explore. Match beats to defeat enemies, solve rhythmic puzzles and find secrets!
>Garden Mode - Create your own beats and music by planting different Sound-Plants on a grid. This is basically a preset drum machine with extra steps.
This is only the tip of the iceberg for Drummi, and I hope you stick around to see all the progress and blunders before the game is fully released.
Many blessings to you reader, have a lovely day.
